After months of hemming, hawing, hand-wringing, and collecting student deposits, residential colleges and universities have started announcing their plans for the next academic year. A majority are planning to hold classes in person. Some, like Middlebury, a small liberal-arts college in rural Vermont, and Bard College, in upstate New York where I will start teaching in August , are planning for most students to return to campus, and provisionally committing only to minor adjustments to the academic calendar.
The TA claims the supervisor screamed at her for dating a student outside of Amherst College—and thus lessening her potential to seduce.
Out of all the initiatives, the Greenway dorms were by far the greatest, as they were designed with smaller communal spaces in order to prevent the cultivation of a partying culture. As students of Amherst College, we came to wonder whether creating such smaller communal spaces in the new dorm has taken any effect on the social culture, if any. For example, we questioned whether the prevalence of drinking has subsided and whether there has been a shift in where the drinking culture occurs.
Over the past few years, ACEMS has grown immensely in size and in professionalism, transitioning from a student club to an official medical service that the school provides. We asked ACEMS for partial data around the time of the demolition in order to evaluate the drinking culture during these critical years; we received access to de-identified data, including date and time, type of call, location, and the EMTs on call.
These calls were used as a baseline of the severity of the situation, for it is a known phenomenon that students do not call emergency services unless the patient has reached a critical state. Thus, we used proportion of alcohol and drug-related calls as a proxy for prevalence of partying in pertinent locations on campus. The above boxplots depict the distribution of the proportion of alcohol and drug-related calls before and after the Socials were demolished by location.
These selected locations were those that we perceived, as current students, would be most heavily affected by the demolition of the Socials. The graphs show an increase in the mean proportion of alcohol and drug-related calls in the Triangle, Mayo-Smith, Seelye, and Hitchock Halls, a trio of dorms once considered to be a quiet dorms reserved for seniors.

The common perception is that Ivy League schools are grouped together because of their similar age, endowments, distinction, selective admissions, and reputation for academic excellence. Because the schools of the NESCAC and the Ivy League are grouped together by athletic conference, the most obvious distinction between them is that student-athletes in the Ivy League participate in a Division 1 league which necessitates training and competing year round.
For the student who excels in both academics and athletics, a Little Ivy league school could be a great fit, as they could participate in multiple sports. Despite sharing many characteristics with the Ivy League—most notably being old, exclusive, academically competitive, and highly regarded—there are many ways the NESCAC and Little Ivies distinguish themselves outside of athletics.
The Little Ivies are typically small the one exception being Tufts University, whose total enrollment has grown to 11, students , rural, and focused on liberal arts. Smaller populations and campuses can often facilitate especially productive and consistent relationships between professors and students. Williams, for example, has about one third as many undergraduates as does Harvard.
These close-knit campuses often prevent students from falling through the cracks. According to U. Little Ivy league schools might also present college-bound students with an easier path to being accepted into a top school.

N ight came early in the chill of March. It was my freshman year at Amherst College, a small school of some 1, undergraduates in the hills of western Massachusetts, and I was a kid on scholarship from Miami. I had just survived my first winter, but spring seemed just as frigid. Amherst felt a little colder — or perhaps just lonelier — without the money to return home for spring break like so many of my peers. At that moment, however, I thought less of home and more about the gnawing feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I walked past Valentine Hall, the cafeteria, its large windows ghostly in the moonlight.

Of your research, what struck you the most? Despite the efforts by elite institutions to recruit low-income students and diversify their campuses, disadvantaged students are still experiencing roadblock after roadblock that really makes them feel like second-class citizens in a first-class world.
The privileged poor went to a high school that the top 5 percent or the top 1 percent send their kids to, so very often low-income kids might study abroad in high school, go to luxurious places, or fly in private jets. The doubly disadvantaged come from low-income neighborhoods and typically distressed high schools, and when they enter college, they experience a real culture shock. There is an economic component because both the privileged poor and the doubly disadvantaged are low-income students.
The prime example is the policies that close the cafeterias during recesses. Food insecurity is a problem that affects students nationwide. How did you get inspired to choose this field of research?
